The Art of Counting is a visual design system that translates numbers and arithmetic operations into a language of shape, color, and composition. It starts from a simple question: can design change how we perceive mathematics? Through color, form, and composition, each number and each operation gets its own coherent visual representation, built on internal rules rather than formulas or symbols.
The system takes two forms. An interactive website, built with p5.js, lets users input their own numbers and watch the system translate them in real time. Alongside it, a series of physical pieces brings that same visual language off the screen. Together they form a project that aims for people to reflect on how they perceive math and hopefully make them curious and see numbers as a way of inspiration and creativity.
