Stories of a Walk

This project was created in my Book Design class at the School of Visual Arts in New York. The assignment was to design a collectible book object that would house Joan Didion’s iconic essay Goodbye to All That, in which she reflects on her experiences living in New York and how she ultimately stayed “too long at the fair.” While the essay itself was required to be included, the focus was on reinterpreting its meaning in a way that didn’t necessarily make the text the central element.

For my interpretation, I explored the concept of time and its abstract representation. I chose to create a series of 25 collages, each representing a different moment in Joan’s journey through New York. Each collage corresponds to a paragraph in the essay and is numbered accordingly. Along with the number, I also included the time it took me to create each piece, as a way of reflecting my own perception of time—especially in a city as fast-paced and multifaceted as New York, a place where the very young and the very wealthy intersect. Through this approach, I aimed to offer a visual meditation on the passage of time, memory, and the city itself.
